Melamine Plate Wall

14 May

I have been looking at dining rooms a lot on Pinterest because I have been informed that mine is bare and echoing. No one likes to hear that about their house, regardless of whether it is true, but in this case it is true.

Apparently the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Canada has a home lottery wherein people buy tickets for a chance to win an awesome mansion. I’m only telling you this because the “Princess Margaret 2011 Showhome” in Toronto was my “pinspiration” and I was unsure what HRH’s role in all this was.

I like a good plate wall, though I don’t have a china collection to display. I have sixteen place settings of one pattern, and it is white, gray and platinum — not the stuff with which to brighten up a white room.

Then I happened upon this:

plastic

And I thought of all the bright melamine plates I have been seeing at Target. Josh doesn’t like random arrangements; he likes patterns and symmetry, especially when he’s eating, and I want him to be happy (especially since I gave him food poisoning yesterday). That’s why Princess Margaret initially spoke to me as a possibility for us. Josh would have a cow if I put this on our wall:

asymme

But this one he ok’d:

symm

Somehow I always end up at House Beautiful.

So I picked out eleven melamine plates, which are lightweight enough to be held up by the smallest 3M velcro strips with no problem. And if they get knocked off the wall when someone walks by, they don’t break so it is much less stressy than hanging a priceless china collection, which by the way also exceeds my budget.

I don’t have a before picture of the dining room but you can imagine it. Here is a before picture of the plates:

Here is a during picture of the wall:

Here is the finished product:

I’m not sure if it’s tacky to decorate with melamine. If I later decide it is, I will replace them with stoneware and maybe when we’re retired, with china. I know it is not technically symmetrical in any direction because of the blue and green plates, but Josh likes it anyway. Success :)

Here is springtime on our front yard tree. I have never seen it with leaves before so I have no idea what to expect, except that I think it will have big pods. Yay.

Notice how the grass is turning green? We have rain today.

Wow! What an artiste! Too bad you couldn’t use upholstered plates, though, and kill two birds :-)

Maybe a tapestry for the other wall?

Don’t go hanging the cat dish up there, by the way!

I really like it! I bought a fruit bowl from target in the same pattern as your pink floral plate. Is painting too ambitious? I know I don’t plan on painting our apartment even though it would help a great deal. You could make Robert help you. And also come back to help you when you have to move.

I really like that pattern. A fruit bowl in it would be cute, but probably not next to my plate wall? I might look like a fanatic. As for painting I really don’t think it’s worth the trouble, especially as I don’t know how much warning I’ll get about moving and I will probably not feel like painting when I’m packing up my whole house. I don’t know, I would really like the dining room to be a different color. Maybe I could just get a rug in there and that would help.

packing up and also cleaning my whole house. blah

I understand completely. I think if there was more permanency painting would be a no-brainer for both of us. Not that I would enjoy the process. A rug would probably help! I want to hang some sort of tapestry in our bedroom because it’s very stark.

        Rugs and fake plants. Heart!

I think the plates are very cute. On the painting, you could think about painting just one accent wall and not the whole room. Maybe a color echoing your favorite plate. Think about a runner for the middle of the table that echos your favorite plate. Post more pictures!

Thanks, Mo, those are both very good ideas! I will post more pics. Now it’s warm enough out that we can go on walks again so I should get some good shots of the outside too. When are you coming to visit??

Very cute and clever! I am a fan of Target plates. I can’t resist some of the patterns because they are so attractive and inexpensive. I also liked your Velcro way of attaching them!

Thanks! I like them too, and now I can buy a new one once in a while to update my wall. :)
I love the 3M strips for hanging anything, especially since we’re renting.

I think your plate decorating turned out great, and I totally like the safety, ease and price of Mealmine. Whats not to like?
